  • Please review the Terms & Conditions prior to ordering.

Our Birds

Our birds are pearl French guinea fowl. The breeding stock for these birds are imported by the hatchery from France. French guineas are 1-2 pounds heavier than standard guineas, yet are still slightly smaller than an average chicken. They are able to fly like standard guineas, and will breed if allowed to free range. They are also the preferred bird for meat purposes since they are larger.

If you have not owned or experienced guinea fowl before, please do some research. They can be loud, they can fly, and they have slightly different requirements than chickens. If left to free range, they will forage in a 5 acre area. This may be an issue if you have nearby neighbors.

Guineas make a great chicken companion and watchdog. They will help warn you (and your chickens) if there is anything suspicious nearby or if any predators are around. They are also very effective organic pest eliminators, and do a great job on ticks, grasshoppers, mice and snakes. Guineas are also not as hard on plants as chickens, and are less likely to damage your garden or landscape while they forage for bugs. If interested in guineas for eating, French Guineas are a dark meat delicacy and similar to pheasant.

Necessary Supplies

Please be prepared for your keets before they arrive. Proper care and equipment is necessary for the keets survival. We have put together a list of things that you will need prior to their arrival:

  • Brooder box. We usually recommend a large Tupperware or stock tank, as it helps contain heat and they cannot slip through any bars that way (such as those of a dog crate). Bin must be lined with wood chips (not shavings, sawdust or cedar!), artificial turf or newspaper covered with paper towel or textured shelf liner.
    • Please DO NOT place keets in a brooder with wood shavings! They will eat it and die (from crop impaction). Instead, use a non slip flooring like paper towels or rubberized shelf liner with newspaper underneath. Newspaper alone is too slippery and will cause spraddle leg.
  • Heat lamp. Brood box needs to maintain 95 degrees for the first week, and can be reduced 5 degrees every week thereafter, until birds are fully feathered or temperature matches the outside temperature. Be sure to allow room in the box for the birds to get away from the heat lamp if needed so they can regulate their temperature. If possible, we recommend the Sweeter Heater, as they do not pose a fire danger and are less expensive to operate.
  • Thermometer. Needed to help monitor temperatures noted above.
  • Feeder. This is up to personal preference. If using a feeder with holes, use an 8 hole for 6 keets or less, and more holes as appropriate.
  • Waterer. Standard mason jar waterer found at the local farm supply store. Keep rocks/marbles in the water dish so they don’t drown. Optional Chick Trainer is suggested.
  • Feed. Guineas need a higher protein feed than chickens. Turkey or game bird starter (24%-28%) is preferred until they are 10-12 weeks old. Lower protein feeds, such as chick starter purchased at the local feed store, will result in stunted development and deformities such as curled toes and frizzed feathers. At 10-12 weeks old they can be changed to chicken layer crumbles, but be sure to mix their food when transitioning to assist in their digestion. We feed our adult guineas layer chicken feed.

FAQ

How do I care for my new guinea keets?

Keets require much the same care as young chicks. Please feel free to contact us for assistance.

Please be prepared for your keets before they arrive. Proper care and equipment is necessary for the keets survival. We have put together a list of things that you will need prior to their arrival, see “caring for keets” above

What do you mean by “French” guinea fowl?

Guinea fowl are very commonly raised in Europe for food. Our French Guinea Fowl are just that- the breeding stock for these birds are imported from France.

French Guinea fowl are “Jumbo” birds, meaning they grow larger and faster than standard Guineas. They are the preferred variety for meat production.

Is it true that French (Jumbo) guineas won’t reproduce in captivity?

No, this is a common misunderstanding. If allowed to free range or given a large area of confinement, Jumbo Guineas will reproduce just like standard Guineas.

What is the difference between Standard and Jumbo guinea fowl?

Jumbo Guinea Fowl weigh about 2.5 pounds heavier than standard guineas when full grown. Jumbo guinea fowl also grow faster than standards.

Are your birds NPIP certified?

Yes!

Can I come by your farm and pick out my birds personally?

Unfortunately, our farm is not open to the public. As such, we will only meet in a public location within Pueblo West. We typically meet our customers at the Big R parking lot as it seems to be the most convenient spot.

We will have your birds carefully packaged in a box that you may use to transport the birds.

Your preorder is closed and I missed the deadline. Can I still purchase birds?

We typically only sell birds by preorder to ensure they have a home. We usually order a few extra birds, which will be for sale first come, first served. We also offer several preorders throughout the year, so you may want to consider ordering for the upcoming order. If we have birds that are still available for sale, you’ll be able to complete a checkout on our guinea fowl page. Otherwise they will show as sold out.

Do you guarantee your birds?

We keep all keets until they are at least 1 week old and thriving. After birds leave our possession, we unfortunately cannot make any guarantees on them. There are just too many variables after they have left our care.

What does straight run mean?

Straight run means birds are sold as a mix of male and female.

Do you ship guinea fowl?

Unfortunately we are not able to ship any Guinea Fowl.

Is there a minimum to order?

We offer no minimums for our preorder. If you would like birds special ordered for you outside of the preorder season, there is a minimum.

Can I order specifically male or female birds?

This is probably the question we are asked most often. Unlike chickens, young Guinea Fowl are impossible to sex. As such, they are sold as straight run only (mix of males and females). Fortunately, several males are able to live peacefully in a flock. Also, the keets are not related and are able to reproduce without any inbreeding concerns.

Do you offer a bulk discount?

Yes, we offer bulk discounts at 50+ ordered
